Maryland Truck Accidents Statistics

  • A 1999 study looked at 18 MD locations and measured annual average daily truck traffic. I-95 N of MD 5 had the highest number, with 23,893, followed by I-95 N of US 1 (Arbutus) with 22,706 and I-95 S of MD 24 with 17,880.
  • Maryland law mandates that every truck registered over 10,000 pounds and operated on public roads display either a US DOT or a Maryland-issued motor carrier identification number, unless specifically exempt.
  • Under that same study, US 301 S of MD 313 had the highest percentage of annual average daily traffic for trucks, at 40.2 percent, with 5,578 trucks.

  • According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS), these statistics were reported for Maryland in 2007:
    • 1,254 large trucks and 189 buses were involved in non-fatal crashes.
    • 555 large trucks and 105 buses were involved in injury crashes.
    • There were 739 injuries in crashes involving large trucks and 195 injuries in crashes involving buses.
    • 699 large trucks and 84 buses were involved in towaway crashes.
