Founded in the 1940s, the National Naval Medical Center is the third largest health care delivery system in the United States. The main facilities, located in Bethesda, MD, conduct medical and dental research, as well as providing care for members of the armed services and United States leaders, including the president and his family. Big changes are in store for the National Naval Medical Center: in 2011, it will merge with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, to create the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, a modernized joint-forces medical facility.
The National Naval Medical Center is a large facility, with 88 buildings located across 243 acres. In addition, the Medical Center includes the hospital ship the USNS Comfort as an operational platform. The ship includes a helicopter deck, over 1000 beds, 12 operating rooms, 4 intensive care units, a medical lab, an optometry lab and a blood bank. At full capacity, it's staffed by more than 1200 active duty medical personnel.
Last year, almost 8000 patients were admitted to the hospital. Another 455,000 visited the outpatient clinics affiliated with the Medical Center, including facilities in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. There were more than 2015 births at the Medical Center, as well as 12,500 ambulatory surgeries.
