Founded in 1986, the National Rehabilitation Hospital specializes in treating patients who have physical disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries, stroke, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, amputation, head injuries, post-polio syndrome and other neurological or orthopedic conditions. It is part of the National Rehabilitation Network, which includes two physician centers, one in DC and one in Bethesda, and 33 Regional Rehab Centers throughout Maryland, DC and Virginia.

The National Rehabilitation Center is dedicated to researching and implementing innovative rehabilitation techniques. The Christoph Ruesch Neuroscience Research Center contains four centers for clinical and laboratory research: the Assistive Technology Research Center; the Center for Post Acute Studies; the Neuroscience Research Center; and the Center for Applied Biomechanical and Rehabilitation Research. The National Research Center is known nationwide for its work on spinal cord injuries and subsequent rehabilitation. In 2003, the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury was founded; three years later, it was named a Model Spinal Cord Injury System by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital boasts the largest stroke recovery program in the nation, with the area's only CARF Accredited Specialty Program for Strokes. Other programs, like the hospital's brain injury program or its orthopedic program, use new technologies to build on and expand the incremental progress their patients make. The National Center for Children's Rehabilitation, the only center of its kind in the nation, offers a modern facility and a secure unit.

The hospital offers extensive inpatient and outpatient services in other areas as well.  Inpatient areas of medical expertise include Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury and Disease, Stroke, Pediatrics, Cardiac Rehab and Orthopedics. Outpatient services include Orthopedics/Post Surgical, Sports Medicine, Hand and Upper Extremity, Back and Neck Injuries, Cancer, Work Injury Services, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury and Disease, Brain and Neurological and Amputee Services. Specialty services include Driver Training Services, Memory and Neuropsychology Services, Prosthetic and Orthotic services, Post-Polio Services, Psychology Services, Rehabilitation Engineering, Sleep Services, Spasticity Services, Wheelchair Seating and Mobility, Therapeutic Recreation and Vocational Rehabilitation.

More than 2,200 in-patients were admitted to the 160-bed hospital last year; an additional 350,000 ambulatory visits took place at the hospital, the physicians' centers and the rehab therapy centers that are part of the network. More than 100 therapists – occupational, respiratory and physical – work at the hospital, along with 15 physicians and over 150 nurses. In total, the National Rehabilitation Hospital has more than 700 employees.

The hospital is also a MedStar health facility. MedStar Health is a not-for-profit network of 9 hospitals and 20 health related businesses located in Maryland and the DC area. It employs more than 5,300 physicians and 23,000 associates. Each year, MedStar facilities serve more than 500,000 patients, including 166,000 inpatient admissions and 1.6 million outpatient visits.
