Founded in 1907, Washington Adventist Hospital is a 380,000 square-foot acute care facility that has served Montgomery County and the greater Washington, DC area for more than 100 years. The first hospital in Montgomery County with a Cardiac Center, doctors at Washington Adventist perform more than 500 open heart surgeries and 6000 heart catheterizations each year.

Washington Adventist Hospital is currently planning a new hospital, to be built 6 miles from its present location, on a 48-acre parcel of land in White Oak. Plans for the hospital include two 8-story towers -- a total of 600,000 square feet -- in an environmentally-friendly facility. The hospital will also have an emergency room and services for outpatients, a non-denominational faith center and a healing garden. It's also expected to have a capacity for 300 beds, all in private rooms. The current hospital site, with almost 300 beds of its own, will also remain open, and continue to serve local residents.

Plans are also in the works for a Center on Health Disparities, designed to combine clinical care, research and health training for underserved populations in Montgomery County.

Washington Adventist Hospital currently offers the Cardio Vascular Institute, the first hospital in the area to perform several heart surgery procedures:

• Mitral valvuloplasty;
• A number of sophisticated echocardiographic procedures;
• MinMaze, a revolutionary surgery to correct atrial fibrillation (AF), a common form of heart rhythm abnormality that can cause stroke.

Additional areas of clinical expertise at the hospital include: Behavioral Medicine, Chest Pain Center, Emergency Department, Hospitalist Program, Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care, Center for Medical Weight Management, Oncology Department, Radiation Oncology Program, Digital Mammography, The Joint Program, Rehabilitation Medicine, Pain Management Center, Radiology Department, School of Radiography, Sleep Disorders Services, Laboratory/Diagnostic Services. Since 2008, Washington Adventist Hospital has partnered with Mary's Center to provide medical care and social services to low income and uninsured patients at the Long Branch clinic. More than 2,500 patients have been seen at the clinic, 335 of them children.
Altogether, Washington Adventist Hospital sees more than 90,000 patients each year. More than 1,300 employees work in the hospital, 470 of them nurses.

Washington Adventist recently adopted the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care. This philosophy encourages patients to be actively involved in decisions about their care, and recognizes the importance of family support, nutrition, integrated therapies, music and art in treatment and recovery.

Washington Adventist is also a part of a network of health services based in Rockville, MD and owned by Adventist Healthcare. Facilities in the network include hospitals, home health agencies, nursing centers and other health care services. Altogether, the network employs over 7,000 health care professionals who treat more than 200,000 patients a year. This makes it one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland.
