In 1958, three specialty hospitals merged to form a single institution, Washington Hospital Center. Today, Washington Hospital Center is the largest hospital in the DC area, set on a 47 acre campus with three other health care facilities in the northwest part of the city. Many regional facilities refer their most complicated cases here.
Washington Hospital Center offers state of the art facilities and expert clinical care in a number of areas. Its cardiovascular program is particularly successful: last year, they admitted more than 8,000 patients and performed more than 21,000 cardiac catheterizations, 8000 electrophysiology procedures and 1874 open heart surgeries. They also completed more than 20 ventricle device implantations.
The Primary Stroke Center saw over 1000 patients last year. Its affiliation with the National Institute of Health provides its patients with access to new and cutting edge technologies that many hospitals don't have. The Adult Burn Center, a national model and the only facility of its kind in the area, treated over 500 patients. The hospital's Cancer Institute diagnosed nearly 2500 new cancer cases and received more than 80,000 visits. The Center for Breast Health offers a full range of surgical, radiation and medical treatments for patients diagnosed with breast cancer as well as access to clinical trials and counseling.
Washington Hospital Center is also one of the top 5% of transplant hospitals in the country. Last year, they performed 109 kidney transplants, as well as 2 kidney/pancreas transplants. In December, they participated with George Washington University Hospital in the largest kidney exchange in history. Using a new blood cleansing technique and cross-matching donors, 13 patients were able to receive new kidneys that month.
MedSTAR, Washington Hospital's Center air and ground transport service, rushed 2500 patients toward hospital care last year. In operation since 1983, it's served more than 49,000 patients over the years.
Other specialized services at the hospital include: Colorectal Cancer and Surgery, Dermatology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Long-Term Care, Hearing and Speech, Heart Services, Hematology Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Interventional Radiology, Medical Imaging, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurological Rehabilitation, Neuroscience Institute, Neurosurgery, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthodontics, Otolaryngology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacy, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Rheumatology, Stroke Center, Thyroid Cancer Center, Urogynecology, Urology, Washington Cancer Institute, Washington Heart and Vascular Services, Women's and Infants' Services.

More than 80,000 patients visited the emergency room and nearly a quarter of these were subsequently admitted to the hospital. 4529 babies were born at the hospital. Washington has an extensive, well train staff to deal with these patients: more than 1600 physicians are on staff, as well as nearly 300 residents. The hospital employs a total of 6116 people.
